Insight Investment is one of the largest investment managers in the UK. On average, Insight holds approximately 1% of the issued share capital of FTSE-listed companies and is, typically, one of the ten largest shareholders in these companies. This chapter describes Insight's approach to shareholder activism relating to corporate responsibility. It sets out Insight's rationale for activism on this topic, its overall approach and the manner in which activism is implemented. The chapter also, using 2004 as an example, presents an overview of a typical year’s activism activity, including a description of the major themes pursued and the outcomes achieved from this activity.
