6. Morley Fund Management’s approach to investment integration
Ronnie Lim, Morley Fund Management, UK
The integration of governance, social, ethical and environmental (GSEE) issues with financial analysis informs the investment thesis, and ensures investors' engagement with companies remains legitimate by being linked to shareholder value. GSEE issues are often under-analysed by market participants. This creates opportunities for active investment mangers to add differentiated alpha if they are able to integrate GSEE issues into decision-making. Morley develops plausible scenarios leading to actionable ideas in its investment universe by prioritising the analysis of GSEE issues likely to affect investment outcomes, and combining it with proprietary quantitative financial analysis. The thematic analysis of GSEE issues together with scenario analysis enables the evaluation of the incremental investment impact of GSEE factors on drivers of shareholder value. A case study demonstrates how this could have impact on a stock's valuation. This multidisciplinary approach to developing investment ideas supports stock selection and portfolio construction.
